I love culture.
And I love cultures that have succeeded in trade marking their heritages into global brands.
That was basically what the French taught the world. Of which the Scottish have mastered.
Since you got to the age of drinking alcohol, you may be wondering why the word ‘Glen’ prefixes leading Scottish whiskies. From Glenlivet, to Glenmorangie, and the popular Glenfiddich.
We have been doing market research on the premium drinks in the Nigerian market space to understand consumer preferences and how the economy has affected individual palates and consumption patterns.
I have engaged extensively with some of the leading distributors in the country and the findings are quite illuminating.
I was introduced to Naija Liquor outlet in Ikeja to get better knowledge of not only the dynamics of the market of premium drinks, but also the challenges faced by both dealers and consumers alike in tackling the growing and damaging impacts of fake products in the market.
It was quite massive and I would say that there are Nigerian businesses doing really big stuff showing resilience and innovation even in this present economy
But what got me most was their efforts at sieving products to ensure adulterated ones are kept off the shelf. Lots of work if you ask me.
They gave me very enlightening tips that were eye opening which I will be sharing subsequently to guide both buyers in scale, and consumers in pints at decision making.
Walking into their premises reminded me of the first day I went to the Senior Staff Club of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and saw a sign post by the door side which reads that: Best brains are preserved in alcohol.
Back to my story…
Glen is the anglicized version of the Scottish Gleann meaning valley, of which there are many in Scotland, all having a U shape.
It is from there that the name from the Scottish Gaelic Gleann Fhiodhaich meaning “Valley of the Deer”, which is reflected in Glenfiddich’s stag logo.
Glenfiddich is unarguably the most popular single malt whisky in the world, selling in 180 countries. Interestingly, over 90% of those who love to drink it outside Scotland cannot pronounce it rightly.
But does it really matter?
The Glenfiddich Distillery was founded in 1886 by William Grant in Dufftown, Scotland, in the glen of the River Fiddich. He started it with his seven sons and two daughters to fulfill a lifelong ambition.
The first Glenfiddich single malt whisky drink ran from the stills on Christmas Day, 1887. And till date, Glenfiddich is managed by the fifth generation of William Grant’s descendants.
But the company took the world by storm in 1991 by creating the first ever vatting of The Glenfiddich 50 Year Old which was married to perfection from nine casks laid down in the 1930s to honour each of the founder’s children who helped to build the first distillery.
Loved for its unique taste from premium barley, and yeast. They even insist that the water must be from the spring in the neighbouring Robbie Dhu Springs. This adds to the final taste comes from mashing, fermenting, distilling, and ageing procedure that is strictly regulated and a traditional production method all contribute to the flavour of Glenfiddich Scotch whiskey.
Like everything consumable, getting your products from sources that are trustworthy is the first step in earning value for money spent.
But above all, if you must give yourself a treat, do so responsibly not only by drinking responsibly, but also by spending on the real thing.
