Sine Metu: The Jameson Family, Makers of the Jameson Whiskey [by Kelechi Deca]

Sine Metu, The Jameson Family, Jameson Whiskey

Jameson Whiskey is the best-selling Irish whiskey in the world. Produced in our distillery in Midleton, County Cork, from malted and unmalted Irish barley, Jameson’s blended whiskeys are triple-distilled, resulting in exceptional smoothness.

In the 1600s when the Vikings ravaged most of the English Channel, families banded together to fight them off. One Irish family exhibited a level of naval bravery unknown in that part of the country.

The Jameson Whiskey History

For that acts of bravery King James awarded the motto; Sine Metu Ad Littora Tendit, which means “Without fear he defends the coast” to the Jameson’s family.

John Jameson a Scottish left his native Scotland, and also abandoned his legal profession and traveled to Dublin, Ireland to set up the Jameson’s Distillery 244 years ago. He took Sine Metu, and left Ad Littora Tendit for his brothers.

He had to marry the daughter of John Haig, the famous Scottish distiller as a hedge to protect his own fledgling distillery.

Jameson’s wife had 16 children, eight sons and eight daughters, and they all had ‘distilling skills’ running in their DNA. For a single woman to birth 16 children tells you how far that society has evolved.

Jameson Whiskey is the best selling Irish whiskey in the world, and the brand has been in that position since about 1805.

Imagine maintaining the first position on something for 215 years running… little wonder the Jameson’s family motto is Sine Metu.

Quality and Consistency is Everything

Cultures that uphold both are always ahead of the rest.

As a consumer, you could glean so much from the product even before tasting it. Acknowledged that lots of counterfeiters have raised their games to such sophisticated levels that it takes a trained eye, and palate to know, but there are still tell-tale signs.

First is price. If it is too good, it is probably not good. Don’t allow your own greed push you to use your money to exchange your health for a sip. Price matters.

Oftentimes, especially whenever a price of a product looks somehow, I self interrogate. I know there are big companies that lower prices for particular markets either as brand promotion or penetrative strategies. But ridiculously low prices are warning signs.

Second is broken seals. There is always something off about the container, especially if you have eyes to details. You’ll notice few misalignments. They are warning signs.

Then display. What makes you think that that expensive drink that is constantly displayed under the heat of the rays from the Sun for days, even if it is the real thing, cannot remain the real thing after a weeks of such exposure.

There is always a warning about the right conditions for storage on the bottle or container of your drink. People who do not care about such things cannot care about selling fake products to you.

Then if you are buying in bulk, can you tell from where the dealer gets his supplies from. You should know if you want to know. Just ask, and insist on knowing. People buy drinks worth ₦5 million and more, and they cannot ask basic questions.

At a time as this, when the economy is biting hard, getting quality cannot be compromised, that is why buying from sources you can trace back to is important. Buy responsibly, drink responsibly.
